Clinic (4 Years Old)

The Clinic Division of East Rockaway Little League is aimed at simply getting baseball and softball exposure to your child.  Below is a typical practice schedule that is followed.

Warm Up 9:00 am to 9:10 am – Kids line-up, stretch by doing jumping jacks, the arms rolling drills, squats, leg lifts to touch knees to hands and touch your toe’s.  We finish our warm up with a light run around the  the bases.

Throwing Drills 9:10 am to 9:20 am – We will show the child how to generally hold the ball as well as throw.  We use hoops on the fence to assist them with their target practice!

Fielding Drills 9:20 am to 9:30 am –  We teach by using the Alligator Drill** which helps them to use their glove first then hand to field grounders!

**Young players should try to catch every ball with two hands. That includes ground balls. Teach youngsters to get in front of every ground ball and place their glove on the ground with the palm facing up. When the ground ball goes into the glove, they should squeeze the ball and put their other hand on top of it to keep it in the glove. The bare hand is like an alligator’s jaw coming down when it bites. Tell the youngsters not to forget to “chomp” when they catch a ground ball.

Hitting Drills 9:20 am to 9:30 am – While we are fielding in small groups we will also be focused on hitting by using a tee while allowing the children to hit into the fence.  The hitting drills are one on one focus to give them the needed attention and safety since we all know 4 year olds love bats!

Red Light/Green Light Game Drill 9:30 am to 9:40 am – We have the kids line up on the first base line to run this drill.  The goal of this drill is to teach them how to listen while on the field to their coaches!

Catch the Coaches tag game 9:40 am to 9:50 am – During this game we run to places in the field like each base, left field, etc. OR Follow the Leader Game – The kids line up behind the coaches and the coaches move around the field in different ways such as skipping, hopping, running, jumping or zigzagging while the players do the same.  These games are just plain fun and the kids love them!

Base Running Relay 8:50 am to 9:00 am – In this drill, you can teach the players to run the bases correctly and have fun doing it. Line up half your team at home plate and the other half at second base. Give the first player in each line a baseball. On your signal, the players will sprint around the bases. Each player must touch all bases and then hand the ball to the next player in line.

Final Team Huddle 10:00 am – We meet as a team and put all hands in while allowing the team to decide what to scream.  The most common is Candy and Ice cream!!

***Equipment Needs for Clinic – gloves and sneakers you are willing to get dirty/dusty depending on field conditions!  Some do buy their own helmets and bats.

***Equipment ERLL Provides for Clinic – helmets, bats, balls, tee’s and uniforms (pants/hat/shirt/socks).
